Elizabeth Story

My work often focuses on natural subjects in various degrees of abstraction. I'm interested in depicting the feeling of a thing more than creating a replica of the thing itself. In the modern world we are often isolated from nature, yet with the increasing stress of modern life I think we need nature more than ever. I often strive for a meditative quality in my work. Artists whose work I love include: Mark Rothko, Elaine de Kooning, Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keeffe, Maya Lin, Eva Hesse, and Teresita Fernandez

I am currently a PhD student in Interdisciplinary Arts. I have a master's degree in English (Critical Theory and African literature.) My art education has been largely informal, but I often think that is how I learn best. I have studied art history through reading, paying special attention to my favorite artists. I learn techniques I am interested in through reading, watching demonstrations, observing and reading about the work of artists I love, and especially through practice. The practice of art is an education unto itself and each new work is an educational experience. I love the physicality of my materials and to know them more deeply and what they are capable of requires working with them consistently and experimentally.
