This triptych of a couple of sandhill cranes, copper leaf on wood panel, was inspired by a period when I was living on a houseboat on the St John's River in Florida. For 5 years, I got to know this couple that lived near by. Watching their daily routines and mating rituals, dancing for one another...

Nicolas was born in Belgium, and left his native country at an early age with his family. Growing up in South Africa, England, Canada and the US, he acquired his inspirations from many travels and experiences. Nicolas comes from a very artistic family, starting back with his Great Great Grandfather, Charles Auguste Fraikin (1817-1893), a well accomplished sculptor and pharmacist. He abandoned chemistry for his love of the white rock. With sculptures in the Musée des Beaux- Arts in Brussels, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and throughout Belgium. Henri Evenepoel (1872-1899), a distant cousin, was a prolific painter who died at the young age of 27. He spent time in North Africa painting life. His works are in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and in private collections. Nicolas started developing his skills at a very early age, when his mother enrolled him in a program for children at the Fine Arts School of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. After leaving South Africa at the age of eight, he continued developing his skills throughout his childhood and after finishing his studies, he continued to travel, living and working in Belgium, Chile and Los Angeles. His works are in private collections in Chile, Los Angeles, Belgium, Bali, England, Singapore, Dubai and Florida. He now resides with his wife in Florida, sharing their love for art and common passions with new American and European projects.
