Erica Nicolay

I am a portrait artist whose work focuses primarily on children, drawn to the subtle language of expression found in a glance held a moment too long or the quiet posture of a body at rest. My paintings explore the emotional depth children carry—often unspoken, yet deeply present.

Rather than idealizing childhood, I seek to honor its complexity. Each portrait is an invitation to slow down and notice what the subject may be feeling beneath the surface, encouraging viewers and collectors to move beyond observation toward understanding—to feel, even briefly, alongside the child.

Balancing emotional intensity with restraint, my work creates space for stillness, reflection, and empathy. These paintings are meant to be lived with over time, revealing themselves gradually through presence and connection.

I am a registered nurse with a lifelong fascination with people—particularly the quiet ways emotion, thought, and experience are expressed beyond words. From an early age, I have been attentive to facial expression, body language, and the subtle cues that reveal inner life, an awareness that continues to guide my work as a portrait artist.

Alongside my formal training, I have spent years independently studying child development and child psychology, reading extensively in these areas out of both personal and artistic interest. I also spent a semester teaching in elementary education, working with second-grade students and teaching science to third graders—an experience that offered daily observation of children in moments of learning, vulnerability, curiosity, and reflection.

I have been drawing since early childhood and became a dedicated artist at the age of fourteen. This long-standing commitment to observing and rendering the human figure—especially children—grounds each portrait in emotional insight, attentiveness, and lived experience.

I maintain a private studio practice and do not currently participate in public exhibitions.
