Erik Bijkerk is from an artist family in the Netherlands, Europe. The Dutch have a long history of painting with oils. Bijkerk is self-taught and a creative thinker who likes to put ideas and abstract concepts into a painted image.
Bijkerk is currently painting on oil paper, as this allows to paint relative small paintings, and paint them fast.
He uses Da Vinci brushes to paint. For the paint itself, Bijkerk uses Blockx oil paints, as well as some Talens Rembrandt and Schmincke Norma. He insists on using genuine lead white, as irreplaceable for its silk appearance and good mixing qualities.
His father Theo Bijkerk was a well-known Dutch landscape painter who sold globally. His brother Martin was a realist painter of butterflies and other animals, with style, photographic detail, and who sold to lovers of that genre.
