Mary Lawrence

I am a contemporary abstract artist and art educator based in California. My work is created using alcohol ink and controlled flame on glass, combining a science-based process with intuitive mark-making. Fire is introduced as an active element, shaping the movement and interaction of pigment in ways that cannot be fully replicated.

I am drawn to bold color palettes and fluid forms that balance intensity with restraint. Each piece captures a moment of transformation — where control and unpredictability meet — resulting in one-of-a-kind works that feel energetic, grounded, and immersive.

In addition to my studio practice, I work as an art educator, which deeply informs my relationship with process, experimentation, and material exploration. My work invites viewers to slow down, observe closely, and experience color and movement as living, evolving forces.
