Fred C Fussell is a painter, writer, and documentary photographer whose primary subject matter is the land and people of the American South. However, Fussell travels widely and much of his work reflects his visits to England, Italy, Mexico, and locations across the continental United States.
Fussell is a former museum curator whose curatorial work focused on the traditional culture, history, craft, arts, and artists of the American South. He has also been engaged as an active artist for his entire adult life. His primary artistic mentors and other artistic influences include watercolorist Dong Kingman, American painters Benny Andrews and Roger Brown, several documentary photographers, and more. He lives and works in Columbus, Georgia, USA, where he maintains a loft studio in a converted early 20th century textile mill. Fussell had authored four books and numerous articles dealing with the art, folkways, crafts, and traditional music in the American South.
