Fiona Demertzidis

My work is fundamentally instinctual – an outcome of the play of the subconscious impulses of the mind, while also a free exploration of structures all around us, whether embedded in nature or located in the experience cyber space.

In stylistic terms the work draws on a range of fascinations from the history of art: the hues and loose painterly responses to nature of J M W Turner, the gestural patterns of Jackson Pollock, the informal play of colour and texture of Hans Hartung, the minimalism of Japanese art.

I’m also fascinated by poetry – especially the themes of such ancient texts as Homer’s Odyssey with its exploration of life’s journey – and the existential philosophical movement of the post-war years with its interrogation of the concepts of contingency and order.
