Frances May

I am a painter working across oil painting, watercolour, painted photography and painted collage. Flowers are often my starting point, used as a visual language through which I explore colour, perception and memory. My work plays with focus and defocus, shifting between clarity and blur to reflect the way images are recalled rather than observed.
Using vibrant colour and layered surfaces, I combine traditional painting with photographic and collage elements, allowing images to hover between abstraction and representation. The process is intuitive and tactile, with each piece evolving through experimentation and reworking, inviting the viewer to slow down and engage with subtle shifts of light, form and atmosphere.
