Dr Frank Freytag: Doctor and artist

Science and art have accompanied him in his self-image and work since his youth. The life cycle is a leitmotif of his work. He is driven by the desire to recognise and understand the world and his own existence.

His exploration of imaging techniques does not end at surfaces, but permeates the body and matter, ranging from ultrasound to X-rays and leading to new visual experiences through the fusion of various techniques. He received his first photographic commissions as a student in neuroanatomy. In the darkroom, he developed photographic papers, images of microscopic thin-layer preparations from brains with dementia changes. Photography then competed with filmmaking. His enthusiasm for experimenting with archaic musical instruments (didgeridoo) is evident in his audiovisual works, while his bridge to electronic sound synthesis has its origins in early tinkering with electronic waste. He built his first synthesiser from a discarded typewriter. Combining sound synthesis and image generation remains an inexhaustible cosmos of creativity for Frank Freytag. The live performance with VJ elements ‘synaesthetic fusion’ is an example of this multimedia work.

Doctorate on the subject of asthma. Lecturer in the didactics of medicine at Frankfurt University Hospital.
