Gabriela Gil

I was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras in 1989 but spent my entire life moving throughout Latin America and the United States. As such, the process of navigating assimilation in changing environments has remained a constant in my life and is at the root of my research. I began my creative explorations at the age of five though ballet and modern dance; however, over the past nine years I have primarily focused on painting. Through my grand, vibrant, and layered paintings I explore my personal narrative as it relates to immigration, self-identity, and the human experience of moving through space and time. I currently live and work in New York City.

My first creative expressions began at the age of five through ballet. However, it rapidly expanded into modern dance, photography, sculpture, and painting thereafter. For the past nine years I have primarily focused on painting, but my work continuously references my multidisciplinary experience.

I pursued an undergraduate degree in Economics, while developing my art practice in parallel. By independently seeking out feedback from mentors and fellow artists, taking university classes that further my skills and knowledge in art, and ultimately spending time at the studio putting everything into practice, I find my art continues to develop dynamically, and authentically every day.
