Gary Smith

I began sculpting and painting because of an impulse one cloudless Saturday morning. By profession, I am a lecturer in English literature, but my need to do art supersedes everything else. Klee and others propose that art makes visible that which the cognitive senses cannot see. My art is based on this view, especially in a society that has reduced everything to the material. Art does not represent; is allows reality to lead and determine the painting. I use acrylic, oils and mixed media materials to explore a vision that is concurrently growing and maturing in my work. Simply put, I hope to evoke a new response to reality through my paintings and other works.
