Gayoun Kim

Through my work, I attempt to reflect the scenes of now in the context of history onto canvas. The scenes on canvas as small fragments of history might be seen as crucial events that should be remembered or could be seen as banal events in another way, due to the nature of history which is iterative. This recording narrative in my work is executed in a way of exploring on the visual language in photojournalism and employing its metonymies onto canvas. Although this attempt toward history painting in the contemporary dominated by photographic documentary may seem to lack legitimacy, the unique power of pictorial language that build a narrative is still inherent in it.
