Gema Martínez

My work explores the aesthetic potential of handwriting through the language of calligraphic abstraction. Rooted in calligraphy, I deconstruct the sign to free the gesture from the need to be read. The expressive power of the mark, the rhythm of writing, and ink as a material become the essence of each work.

Positioned between writing and abstraction, my practice explores traces, layered memory, and the unspoken as elements of an open visual language, free from fixed meanings. Rather than conveying a message, each piece invites a direct, intuitive encounter in which texture, rhythm, and gesture take precedence over words.

I have trained with some of the world's leading calligraphers through intensive workshops and masterclasses held in Italy, Argentina, and Spain. This foundation in traditional and contemporary calligraphy became the starting point for developing my own artistic language in the field of calligraphic abstraction.
