Serhii Hontarovskyi

Serhii Hontarovskyi (b. 1964) is a contemporary Ukrainian marine and landscape artist living and working in Odesa. He is the creator of the signature style Vitrailism (unique oil technique). His work represents an emotional synthesis of Expressionism and Impressionism, where light is the central protagonist.

Style and Technique. The artist works exclusively with oil on linen canvas, using a palette knife to create a rich impasto texture. Serhii developed a unique technique called Vitrailism, which blends the sculptural volume of classic impasto with the optical depth and effect of a stained-glass. The creation process of each painting involves three distinct stages:

Applying a dense textured base with a palette knife;

Creating a graphic structure ("energy threads") using the sgraffito technique;

Final multi-colored glazing, making the canvas literally glow from within.

This achieves a "living painting" effect: the relief strokes catch the light, changing the perception of the landscape depending on the ambient lighting in the room.
