Gregor Stehle

Gregor Stehle is a German artist living and working in the Chiemgau region. His practice spans painting, installation, sculpture and photography. At its centre is the question of how space emerges through relationships between the body, perception, atmosphere and presence. Colour, emptiness, material and gesture open a space for direct experience.

An ongoing focus is Tage und Zeichen (Days and Signs), a series of dated works on A1 paper. Each sheet arises from an encounter with a day, a mood and an atmosphere. The works move between reduction and presence: the image becomes an event rather than a representation.

Stehle studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe and completed the master class of Professor Harald Klingelhöller in 1999. He taught painting at Pforzheim University in 2003–2004 and devoted the years 2005–2015 to the study of Zen Buddhism in a monastery. Since 2020, he has directed the Stefan Holzmüller Archive and Estate.

His working process begins with a blank sheet and an openness to what may emerge. A sheet can remain on the wall for days before the first gesture becomes possible.
