In my paintings and photographs alike, processes and materials are my means of visually contemplating various aspects of my lived experience. The transparency of plexiglass, my chosen surface for painting, is symbolic of an attempt to let the viewer see through the 'body' or figure, and all layers of the artistic process. The materials of acrylic and marker on plexiglas also serve in the depiction of a personal iconography. Tensions between organic and inorganic matter arise as I blur and juxtapose materials and colors, and drawn and painted areas. My palette is often saturated, almost cheerful in its lighter blues and pinks, but is then darkened when I bring in lines and other marks in black marker. Images are suggestive of landscapes or figures, but abstract and legible in various ways. Light acts as a visual element, interacting with the opacity and transparency of the painted surface and the reflectiveness of paint, changing the appearance of colors and surface luminosity as the light changes.
I hold a BA in visual art from Rutgers University (2004) and ABD in Art and Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University (2015). I was an artist-in-residence at Yaddo, Saratoga Springs and at the School of Visual Art, NYC. I now live and work in NYC.
