Born 1954, Bryn Mawr, Pa., I have been a free lance artist almost all of my adult life. I spent over 20 years largely doing mural work for interior design businesses on the east and west coasts of the US. For the past several years I have focused on doing easel sized paintings, and on producing prints of many of those works, which are sold through my website, and are also available through representation in New York, Los Angeles and San Diego at present.
As an artist I am largely driven by a passionate interest in the decorative arts, set designs, fashion and children's illustration, and my desire to tie those things together with my own every day life and the things around me in the house where I live with my wife and son. I have been inspired by such a large number of artists and illustrators that a complete list would be overwhelming, but to mention a few there would be Jean Pillement, the 18th century French artist, J. J. Grandville, the 19th century French illustrator, the 20th c. neo romantic painters, Christian Berard, Eugene Berman, and Marcel Vertes, and lastly the contemporary children's illustrator, Lisbeth Zwerger. My father, Wing Howard, was a self taught but skilled artist, who primarily painted watercolors, largely cityscapes and landscapes. He was much influenced by the work of Raoul Dufy and Ludwig Bemelmans, and he influenced me to become an artist, and taught me to use watercolors. I acquired further drawing and painting skills through earning a BS in industrial design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Ca. in the early 1980's, and through three years of study earlier on at the Boston University School of Fine Arts.,
