My life has been an interesting journey. Even with my best laid plans it has been necessary to use the "turn signal" from time to time. Born in 1960, almost 2 months premature and seeing a weight of just over 2 lbs., I should have know life might be an uphill push. I grew up poor, on a river bottom farm in the central Midwest. Life and work, even as a child was hard & plentiful. I did push up the hill...and down the other side. My early life cultivated humility, loyalty and a strong work ethic. I was also blessed with being good with my hands which I have used in a good many disciplines. In 2015 a fork in the road has actually brought me full circle, returning me to a early love of art. I was fortunate to have grown up 3 miles down the road from famed folk artist George Colin. His use of soft pastels nurtured my love of the simple little sticks of pure pigment. The immediate bold & brilliant colors never cease to amaze me. I generally start with darker colors first, adding those lighter to develop the highlights. I cut hardboard panels to size and prepare them with a painted base with a nice tooth that allows me to build the layers of color. The sights and sounds of my childhood come to life in my artwork, whether it be my abstracted farm animals, cherished pets or my local hero, Abraham Lincoln. Finding joy is the ultimate goal for me, but especially for the observer of a finished piece.
Being a self-taught artist David has discovered that often some of his best work comes from happy accidents.
