Hugo Kevelaer is a Belgian photographer based in Brussels. His work lies within the field of social documentary photography, with an intimate and portrait-driven approach. Through his images, he seeks to build trust with his subjects in order to reveal a raw and genuine form of sincerity. Human experience and its relationship to the environment are always central to his practice.
His projects are often developed over long periods of time, requiring patience, reflection, and deep immersion in the realities he documents — a working method he fully embraces. In 2022, he completed his personal project Celiac before traveling across Europe in search of new photographic narratives. During a road trip in Romania, he found the inspiration for a new body of work.
Among his most notable projects, Sillage focuses on children and teenagers placed in foster care — young people separated from their parents and entrusted to new homes. Through this work, Kevelaer explores themes of memory, belonging, and the invisible marks left by family separation.
