Hüseyin Ak is a Turkish contemporary painter who has been developing his artistic practice for more than forty years. His work focuses primarily on the human figure and its capacity to express psychological tension, desire, loneliness, vulnerability and the instability of identity.
Working mainly with oil paint on large-scale canvas, Ak uses a highly physical process that combines brushes, palette knives, layering, scraping and repeated reworking of the surface. His paintings are not based on conventional realism. Figures are deliberately distorted, fragmented or partially concealed, allowing the body to function as an emotional and psychological form rather than a literal representation.
The material quality of paint plays a central role in his practice. Thick textures, intense colour contrasts and visible gestures give the works a strong physical presence. In many paintings, the figure and the surrounding space gradually merge, creating images that move between figuration and abstraction. Faces and bodies may remain recognisable, yet they resist a single narrative or interpretation.
