Always an artist, I began painting in earnest in 1996. It has become a third career.
The first was as graphic designer and magazine art director of the highly innovative and photographically exhilarating Surfer Magazine out of Southern California. I also designed many other publications, graphic materials and sophisticated books during that period.
The following career was comprised of a number of occupations with an international humanitarian and literacy organization where I served, with my family in a number of global locations including Guatemala (two years), Papua New Guinea (two years) and British Columbia, Canada (four years), as well as both in Texas and California. During that 32 year stint I performed such occupations as Director of Printing and Publications, Art Director, Creative Director, Development Director, Vice President and President. I've traveled in over 20 countries, often to the remotest parts. Some of my artwork has been influenced by this exposure.

As Robert Henri says in his book, "The Art Spirit," all education is self-education.
To say I am self-taught would be giving myself too much credit. It's true, I don't have a degree in art, rather my Master's Degree is in Leadership (Azusa Pacific University, earned during my second career) but I've submitted myself to art studies in various institutions and workshops in both Canada and in the U.S.
For my personal criteria, I want my art to be aesthetically pleasing, i.e., beautiful, in terms of design and color and execution. If it evokes an emotional response, all the better.
Among my influencers, either directly or indirectly, are Jove Wang, Ken Howard, David Liffel, Ken Auster, Carol Anderson, Dan McCaw, Robert Heindel, Bye Bitney, S.C. Yuan and from the past, Claude Monet, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Nicolai Fetchin.
I also teach, both workshops and small private classes, which is its own kind of learning.
