About Iona Rowland
It is the interplay between painting and screen-printing which dictates my visual language. Media serves as a metaphor for cultural concerns such as fast-fashion, the death of the original and the role of technology in contemporary mass culture. I am creating a tension between print and paint; each acting as a disguise for the other, pushing elements back and forth to form a compositional flux which suggests the image is flickering or transposing in front of the viewer. The shifting image exposes the ephemerality of glamour within the context of fashion, inferring that even the painted image is subject to change. I am remixing as a means of revealing, unveiling the transience of the commercial allure. Paintings such as ‘Metamorphosis of the Girl Next Door’ demonstrate an almost sculptural application of paint whereby the image is carved out of the canvas to create artificial form. This comments on the fictionality of the fashion magazine, satirising a fascination with effect and playful spectacle. I am generating a false sense of depth without denying flatness to instigate a consciousness of illusion. In recognising artificiality, the viewer takes on a participatory role and the image is reduced to a sophisticated fallacy. Recently I have expanded my practice to include sculptural works alongside paintings as a visual and ideological interruption. The intention is for the object to disrupt the viewers attention, causing their focus to bounce between multiple surfaces and forms as if flicking through the pages of a fashion publication.
