Born in Tallinn, Estonia, Iouri Tomberg’s artistic journey spans roots in Mariupol, Ukraine, and St. Petersburg, Russia, before leading him to his current creative home in Montreal, Canada. While he attended art schools in his youth, it was his later discovery of contemporary art that truly ignited his independent practice, shaping him into a versatile modernist painter.
Tomberg’s work is celebrated for its bold experimentation with color and form, frequently bridging the gap between dramatic expressionism, structural modernism, and decorative pop art. Heavily influenced by the raw energy of Chaim Soutine and the color theories of Wassily Kandinsky, he crafts striking cityscapes and figures that feel both nostalgic and deeply contemporary. Working in oil, acrylic, and mixed media, Tomberg treats his canvas as an evolving surface, layering vibrant palettes and graphic lines until a perfect, harmonious depth is achieved.
A regular participant in the Montreal West Artists Showcases, Iouri Tomberg’s original paintings are held in growing private collections throughout Canada, Estonia, Israel, and Russia.
