James Lucas

Colour and surface texture dominate my work. I work with rich vociferous colours in complex swathes, layers and trails of paint. Many of my heavily worked surfaces become landscapes to themselves. I prefer to leave it to the spectator to discover the inherent qualities of these landscapes. Using a bold palette and gestural application, I seek to explore humanity's relationship to nature and existential concerns through my paintings. My paintings are hugely influenced by the magnificence and drama of nature's forces and empty spaces and my emotional reaction to world events. I paint mainly in my greenhouse - being surrounded by nature, songbirds, the movement of trees in the wind, rain on the roof, the change of natural light as the day progresses all help my focus on my art as a part of nature.
