Joe Boddy

As a freelance illustrator for over 20 years, creating for the juvenile publishing market, my work was created primarily with traditional mediums and methods. Pen & ink became the basis for all of my illustration for children books, magazines and educational work. Full color was most often done using transparent ink or watercolor wash over the ink line. While devoted to traditional, tools and mediums on illustration board. A new tool called the computer helped me to interject new insights into old methods.

After some years of dedication to learning Photoshop. I began to do things with pencil sketches, or pen line work and color inks, that I could never achieve on illustration board or canvas. Some years into this process I also discovered that by introducing photography I could add even more exciting content and depth to the work. It is clear to me that by making use of all of my former disciplines and combining them digitally, I am able to create compositions with multiple levels of color, line, texture, value and hue. including subject matter.

Joe earned his degree in Art from Montana State University where he met and married Marlys, his life long love, wife fellow parent and studio partner.

After graduate studies, he worked as a Graphic Designer/Art Director before turning his full attention to freelance illustration. He specialized in children literature. This art greatly influenced his work as a sculptor and digital painter.
