My art is born from the blinding, shimmering light of Redondo Beach. I grew up watching the Pacific sun turn everything it touched into a radiant silhouette—a visual memory that defines my practice as a sculptural impressionist.
My foundation in structural truth began at El Camino College, the same institution that shaped renowned expressionists like Dan McCaw. It was there, in a 1989 sculpting class, that my professor first recognized a raw, 'Rodin-esque' energy in my work. This instinctive handle on mass and light was further sharpened during my apprenticeship under the late California master Carson Gladson. By working directly on the underpaintings of his renowned pastels, I mastered the secret of building atmospheric glow from the ground up.
I first fully committed to the palette knife in 2012, and today, my work is a departure from the 'safe.' I am reclaiming my voice with a bolder, more aggressive style I call 'Emergent.' My figures are purposefully distorted and vague, emerging from shimmering 'unknown' landscapes that reflect the energy and momentum of a world in motion.
Based in San Clemente, California, my originals are collected internationally. Whether I’m 'slamming' thick impasto onto a canvas or sculpting a delicate r...
Formal Academic Foundation
AA in Studio Art | El Camino College, Torrance, CA
It was here, in 1989, that my foundation in structural form was established. Studying in the same halls that shaped expressionists like Dan McCaw, my work was first recognized by my sculpting professors for its raw, 'Rodin-esque' energy—a quality that still anchors my sculptural approach today.
Self-Directed Mastery (2009–Present)
Beginning in 2009, I dedicated myself to an intensive, self-directed study of oil painting. Through a rigorous practice of daily painting and deep immersion in the techniques of the masters, I developed the signature palette knife style I first fully committed to in 2012.
Master Workshops & Advanced Studies
I believe an artist’s journey is one of constant expansion. I continue to refine my 'Emergent' style through direct study with contemporary masters:
Alyssa Monks Online(2025): Exploring the boundaries of figuration, distortion, and the "vague" profile.
Camille Przewodek Plein Air Workshop(2024): Advanced study in the Colorist tradition and the logic of light.
Apprenticeship under Carson Gladson (1997-1999): Master-level training in building atmospheric glow and underpainting for depth.
