About J Forsyth
I am a photographer, curator, and gallery owner based in Melbourne. Since 2004 I have been employed as a professional photographer both nationally and internationally, and I've explored many different fields including media, lifestyle, real estate, industrial, and event photography. In my artistic practice I particularly like taking pictures that capture the beauty of the ordinary, particularly suburban and small town buildings, construction sites, and people going about their day.
I graduated with a Diploma of Arts (Applied Photography) from the Photographic Imaging College in Melbourne.
I've been documenting Melbourne's legendary Pub Footy competition (Renegade Pub Football League) for the last couple of years. Shooting the crowd, teams as a whole and making individual footy cards for players with a very 80’s VFL vibe. Usually at the end of a season we hold a big exhibition/party where players and fans can purchase photographs and footy cards and generally have a lovely time hanging out. Our next Pub Footy exhibition will be held in April at The Tote as part of the league fundraiser. My pub footy work, while shot digitally has a very band poster/lo-fi feel to it.
I have contributed to a number of group exhibitions at galleries such as Brunswick Street Gallery, the Centre for Contemporary Photography, and also held a solo exhibition featuring social documentary images taken all over the world over a ten year period.
