John Pedder
Woodcut printing slows me down, allowing me to invest more of myself in apparently simple marks.
I’ve spent most of my life avoiding the sophistication that experience and refined craft skills will inevitably bring, using them instead to constantly distil my images. My main motive is the basic need to create. The subject matter tends to deal with the nobility of life: finding the honour and goodness in a person, a deed, a situation, coupled with with a large helping of humour, then hopefully you have what you see before you, an aesthetic journey using craft skills and design to try to make sense of an increasingly bewildering world. Sophistication is all well and good but in the primitive you will find the real truth.
I am currently showing my ongoing ‘Small Mercies’ Exhibition on Instagram @johnapedder . I have set myself the challenge of creating a 7 inch woodcut print every weekday until June when they would have been exhibited at Cupola Contemporary art gallery. Those plans have been changed for obvious reasons and you can now see the whole project in full colour on instagram! ?❤️
