José is a Spanish-American painter who explores the confluence of two worlds. After living and working for more than 25 years in the United States, he has returned to Spain, bringing with him a mature and largely self-taught pictorial language heavily inspired by the impressionism and realism of figures such as Sorolla, Sargent, Monsted, and Aspevig.
His work branches into two great passions: portraiture and landscape. His brush masterfully captures everything from the regional customs (costumbrismo), light, and architecture of Andalusia (patios, fountains, and traditions) to the vastness of the Texas and Arizona horizons. Having left an indelible mark on the United States—where his work ranges from public murals in Round Rock and sacred art at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Austin, to residential mosaics in Houston—José reopens his studio in Spain to fuse the past and present of his vibrant creative universe. Although he currently lives in Spain, he can ship his paintings to the United States where he also keeps a number of paintings stored.
Although I am mostly a self-taught artist, I took art classes at UNM in the United States and at the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas in Spain. I am also the brother of the famous Spanish religious sculptor Juan A. Blanco Ramos, with whom I shared an art studio for many years."
