Josef "Jupp" Soetebier's work takes a serious look at personal archaeology, examining memory, and diving deep into what is truth and what are lies. His abstract sculpted surfaces grudgingly reveal a multi-layered history at the same time disguising intent. He pushes elements across the picture plane and into our world, summoning a curious notion of artifact over art, and turning ideas into a fleshy visual experience. * * * * * * * * * * * * * Born in the American Midwest, Mr. Soetebier graduated with an MFA in Painting from the University of Florida. In the early 1990's, he taught drawing at the New World School of the Arts in Miami and was part of the South Florida Art Center on Lincoln Road. After many years in NYC working on projects with such companies as Evergreene Painting Studio, Jupp permanently located to California joining the Los Angeles Art Association in 2017 and is active in curated art fairs on the West Coast such as stARTup, Fabrik and Conception. He currently maintains a studio at his home just outside Napa Valley and in the Mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles.
