Kate Smith

My work is primarily concerned with drawing - from traditional pencil on paper to drawing with thread and light - and how seriality, repetition and variation play a part in my working practice. I am particularly interested in drawing within a contemporary context - not as sketching of an idea or representation of an object but rather an investigation into surface/ space, outline/ edge and mark/imprint. Recent research has involved considering drawing as a form of contact - investigating the relationship between gesture/ mark/ echo and looking at the marks and residues left by a touch or gesture. I am also interested in the relationship between digital and physical drawing. Much of my work is made using very fragile materials such as tracing paper and tissue paper but I also use more durable materials such as Perspex, polythene and fabric. Whilst my work can be viewed as individual pieces, I am particularly interested in connections made within and between work through installation and how the thought process of creating work changes and develops over a period of time.
