Katy Mcdonald

I am produce contemporary outcomes by using a
combination of different, often traditional, printmaking methods and techniques. My work is influenced various street artists, and also shapes and growths seen in nature and decay. I am inspired by the transition of street art
escaping the frame in the gallery to developing a new life and a new audience existing outside the conventional exhibition space constraints and vice versa. I find the placement of art within the environment very appealing, and also how
this affects the viewers' opinion of it.

I began studying Arabic calligraphy, and comparing some of its qualities to graffiti writing. Both are often indecipherable, but can readily be recognized as lettering or symbols. I attempt to create a visual language, which resembles
lettering, but can be interpreted by anyone, through the use of imagery and pattern rather than text.

In January 2013 I completed a two-week Printmaking residency, which really informed and changed my practice. Working all day and being completely submerged in my work took me on a spiritual journey of sorts. I began to relate my practice to a form of faith, belief or a religion.
