I paint from a place of instinct and spirit in the Appalachian Mountains. I feel my past incarnations coming forward for the ritual. My markings are their familiar gestures of these past awarenesses that I find strong memory within. Together, I build and deconstruct, pull back and push forward. I deny any desire to transfer image, object or idea onto the canvas. I am not interested in a literal communication of a specific thing but allowing something to happen that has an identity of its own. I hope to give the work a presence of guttural knowing, a reminder of something never lost but often forgotten within the viewer.
