Kumi Sasaki

Tokyo-based artist Kumi Sasaki transforms the rigid norms of Japanese society—gender expectations, conformity, and unspoken family pressures—into vibrant acrylics, digital works, and immersive AR experiences.

Drawing from vogue dance and Chinese martial arts, her abstract forms of flowers, animals, and fluid shapes liberate emotions too complex for words.

Detailed Artist Statement
Born and raised in Japan, I have always felt a profound disconnect from the idealized images of womanhood, stable careers, and harmonious family life that society prescribes.

These "myths" often silence the raw, ambiguous emotions they evoke—frustration, yearning, rebellion.

Through years of training in vogue dance and Chinese martial arts (including swordplay and Bagua Zhang), my body learned to express what words could not: fluid motion, inner conflict, and defiant grace.

In my art, these experiences manifest as symbolic flowers bursting with suppressed energy, animals embodying untamed instincts, and shapes that shift between harmony and chaos.

Working in acrylic for tactile depth, digital media for precision, and AR for interactive transformation, I invite viewers to confront and reimagine their own societal constraints.
