James Corbiere

My government name is James Corbiere, and my true identity is Waabimakoohns (Waa bih muh koohns) or Little White Bear. I am Aanishinaabe, from the Odawa tribe, one of First Nations that inhabited the Great Lakes Region of Canada.
I have only recently begun to express feelings and thoughts- conflicted as they are, through my artwork. Many years ago, as a child, I suffered abuses at the Catholic Chirch, and in the last year or so, they have come back to haunt me. Many of the drawings have elements of Christianity, mixed with predominantly Anishinaabe teachings with connections to the Natural world.

University degrees in Biology and Education, and many, many traditional Anishinaabe teachings.
