Maizie GIlbert
Maizie Gilberts work has been included in exhibitions at the CCA Wattis Institute, The San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, and Southern Exposure Gallery as well as other venues. Her photographs have most recently been included in an exhibition at the Pulliam Deffenbaugh Gallery in Portland, Oregon for an show called Bay Area Bazaar. Her work has been written about in Artweek, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, and Art Papers Magazine. She completed her MFA at the California College of the Arts in 1997 and currently lives and works in San Francisco.
These images describe pieces of a non-specific narrative. I am thinking about a way of feeling and making a story about it out of photographs. I am looking for, or looking at, a quiet still lingering and a kind of disassociation. It seems truer for the story to have gaps in it and not very much information about the ending. Like watching a movie in a foreign language without subtitles, apprehending the general story but escaping the details. Within this there may be moments of recognition, something unexpected, intimate and strange at the same time.
