Marcus Luconi

Marcus Luconi is a Brazilian fine art photographer born in Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul, in 1953. Raised in São Luiz Gonzaga, in southern Brazil, he belongs to the third generation of photographers in the Luconi family. His first lessons in photography came from his parents, who worked as professional photographers in a small town in the historic Missions region.

After briefly attending the Military Police Academy in Porto Alegre, Luconi chose to pursue a creative path. In 1975, while working as a freelance photographer in Florianópolis, he realized that photography would become his lifelong profession. He subsequently worked as a photographer and journalist, became an advertising photographer and taught photography as a guest instructor at Senac RS.

In 1979, he founded Kromak, a photography company specializing in fashion catalogues and home to one of Brazil’s largest photographic studios at the time. That same year, he began developing his personal body of work, exploring the human figure, artistic nudity and the relationship between the body, nature and memory. My education in photography has been primarily self-directed and shaped by a lifetime of professional practice.

When I left the Military Police Academy in Porto Alegre in 1973, I had completed my secondary education and begun studying subjects related to law. My true education as a photographer, however, developed outside the traditional academic environment.

I learned through constant professional experience, personal photographic essays, careful observation, experimentation and critical reflection on my own work. Books, specialized magazines and technical publications were also essential sources of knowledge. Between 1987 and 2000, my annual visits to Expo Photo in New York allowed me to follow international developments, technologies and trends in professional photography.

Above all, my education has always been driven by curiosity and by the desire to understand what photography could become in my hands. My personal projects served as an ongoing laboratory in which experience, mistakes and discoveries gradually formed my visual language. Much of this knowledge could not have been acquired in the photography classrooms available at the time—and perhaps could not be fully acquired in a classroom today.
