My work is inspired by Mexico and its culture. I love to tell and represent the myths, legends, and ways of life of pre-Hispanic people such as the Aztecs, and Maya. Also, today’s ethnic groups, alive and vibrant.
I moved to the United States after marrying my Connecticut-born husband. I started showing my paintings at local galleries and getting mentions in newspapers.
In Connecticut, I discovered a new life. Seascapes, sailboats, lighthouses, whales, and blue-eyed people started appearing in my work. Later I found Native Americans. They are stunning.
I took drawing and painting lessons at age 19. There were no art schools in my hometown, in the heart of the Mexican highlands. I learned from Alejandro Rodriguez Creel, a well-known Mexico City artist.
I do not have an arts diploma or a college degree. I just assimilated the skills I gained at my teacher's workshop in Tulancingo, Hidalgo. Once I felt I could charge for my work, I left the studio and started taking commissions. I worked for my state's government, learning the commercial and practical side of art and design. I also had the chance to travel across my country, learning from traditional craftspeople.
