About Marit Geraldine Bostad
The artist Marit Geraldine Bostad (1976) works and lives in Horten, Vestfold County, Norway. Her studio is at an old naval base, where she finds most of her workinspiration in the middle of great nature and historical buildings. Marit Geraldine was originally an Art Director, with 10 years of visual projects within film, illustration and consept building in Oslo. Besides the commercial work she has always been painting - taking part in small scale art projects. In 2010 she left the art direction field for good. A change she has never regretted. - Lost in my computer, the real world became distant and cold. Untitled. Page by page. I simply had to get rid of all the filters, shortcommands – empty words. And so I did. When I paint I go into another place. Not by trying, just by beeing. Interaction with my tools, my colours, the white canvas beeing covered, layers by layers. More and more hidden. When I am in that state – creating a connection with the artwork growing, I have learned by experience, that someone else will connect to it as well. But How, is always The Unknown. A strenght of abstraction itself. My strokes are a constant search for a meaning, - demanding honesty, courage, fear, joy and curiousity. Page by page. With real titles and subtitles. "The Abstract is what is left when you peel of the unnecessary belongings. What happens next, is truly fascinating. So many unique pair of eyes. So many stories. The artist is almost forgotten, and that is to me a true meeting. About my materials: I mostly paint with acrylic paint on canvas. Sometimes I reinforce a color or an expression with oil paste at the end of the process. The paint I use is only the very best and has longlasting, ecofriendly qualities. The colors stay the same year after year with great resistance against both light and erosion. These materials keeps the artwork at its best, regardless of time. I adore my acrylic paint called Neptun Artist Acrylics. It allows me to be spontaneous. I have painted with oil, but to continue a new layer you have to pause. I loose the nerve and the real presence, returning to the piece hours and days later. The time acryl paint takes to dry (wich is not so long) I actively use in my painting process. Sometimes "I mess up» my «perfect» motive when it is almost dry. Other times I want a sobre touch and add water in the mix. The acrylic has so many great sides, and a lot of time people ask if I paint with oil. Just because I can make it look oily, thick and classic. Materials have a great impact in the process of making an artwork. It allows you to reach beyond imagination. Surprise yourself, everytime. Push you further and develop your own artistic identity.
