Marjae Gilbert

Born and raised in Chicago Illinois, her desire for art began at a young age. Using cardboard material to create paper-dolls, purse, and jewelry. by the time she was twenty years old, she sewn wearable clothes by hand with needle and thread. She later obtained sewing machine and began to design children's clothes, prom dresses, and wedding garments.

In 1980 she received a BA degree in social work at Northeastern University in Chicago and worked in a group home for girls as a social worker. In addition she taught sewing class and art related subjects in an afterschool YMCA program, and occasionally worked as a judge for the YMCA, consumer science (sewing classes).

In 1989, she moved to Atlanta , GA. to seek a career in clothes designs at the Atlanta Art Institute. with a background in in social work and nursing, her passion for humanity led her to follow a pathway to open a licensed adoption home for medically fragile infants and children with disabilities. In 2004, she created a soft sculpture doll called "Downy Dolls", a series of dolls that gave homage to children with disabilities. for several years, she attended clay hand building classes at Callanwolde school of fine arts in Atlanta GA. for several years.
