BIO - Marta Utsler is an abstract painter. She was born in England and had moved to the United States aged 5. In 2010 she returned to the UK and lived in London for a time; then, discovering St. Ives, Cornwall as a renowned art community, she was based, and exhibited her work there, for 4 ½ years. Next came an enjoyable and most successful time in Scotland; now Marta lives and works in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, England. At present, her work is exhibited in and around Edinburgh.
Her work is in private collections all over the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Ireland.
ARTIST STATEMENT - The medium I use is primarily acrylic and my procedures are unplanned. The paint is built up with layers to create surface texture, altering and adding what is most essential to the development of the work. Through this editing process an application may be rejected because it may become unrelated to the whole of the piece, forcing me to probe new approaches to modify an existing idea. My marks have true purpose which translate into a unique form and ultimately the final interpretation. From there, an impression is created and I believe my work has a passionate yet quiet drama, sometimes intense while other times sentimental, with an awareness of place and a sense of atmosphere. I continually push my limits, which transform me and allow me to evolve further.
