Matilda Barretta

My practice inquires into the experience of intensity and mystery in daily life. Figures occupy everyday spaces in dramatic states of simultaneous action and introspection; and the scenes, like film stills, hint at wider narratives without giving more than the moment away. Vibrant colours charge the works’ emotion, and thin layers of paint reflect the uncertainty and instability of lived experience. In addition, use of light, shade and compositional elements build the drama and mystery.

I studied for undergraduate at Glasgow School of Art (2019-2021), took an exchange term at L’Ecole de Beaux Arts, Paris (2019) and did my foundation year at Camberwell College of Art (2018).

I am exhibiting in ’Les Animaux Modeles’ at ROSL, London from 14th . My previous exhibitions include ’Midnight Snacks’, Avalon Cafe, London (2021); ’Glasgow School of Art Degree Show 2021’, Wasp Studios and various other venues, Glasgow (2021); ’Rabbit Skin’, The Glue Factory, Glasgow (2020); ’L’Exposition de L’Atelier de Tim Eitel’, Main Hall of L’Ecole de Beaux Arts, Paris (2020); ’Strange Visions’, The Old Hairdressers, Glasgow (2019).
