South Africa- 1951. Taught by my parents who were both artists ARTHUR CANTRELL & FAYETTA VARNEY. I presently live in Mallorca after 30 crazy years in Madrid. My artwork comes from many different inspirations, but as I mostly paint women, I think the inspiration is obvious. (not my cat). I enjoy playing with rennaissance stuff in a modern context and I have lots of fun with erotic themes, just because it allows me to bring out my naughty rebellious side. Recently I have been exploring large scale portraiture using charcoal as my main medium...messy stuff! But I´m getting textures I wasn´t able to get previously and I think my work has gone to the next level. (how many levels are there, by the way?)
Max Cantrell, born in South Africa and nationalized Spanish, lives and works in Palma de Mallorca on the island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. He has exhibited principally in Madrid in Galleries such as Alfama, Dionis Bennassar (various times), Quorum among others. He has had exhibitions in the USA in New York at the Montserrat Gallery and The Castle Gallery in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 1993 he was chosen as the the most promising artist in New York by the prestigious magazine Art Review. Lately he has only exhibited in Mallorca at Galeria Berlin, Nit de l´art, Galeria Marearte, Artevision, Can Calet, Costa Nord amongst others. He has received numerous prizes and distinctions all around the world. He has work in both private and public collections in Madrid, Fuerteventura, Bangkok, Perth, New York, Los Angeles, San Diego, Indianapolis, Zurich, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Paris, Johannesburg, London amongst other places. His work hangs in the Contemporary Art Museums of  Fort Wayne, Indiana and Puerto Rosario, Fuerteventura. He shares his creative time between painting and writing and some teaching.)
