Michael Weinman

Since the late 1960's, while in high school, I have had an avid interest in photography. My early pursuits centered around cultural portraiture, traveling extensively-particularly throughout the Near and Far East. My interest in the cultural work began as a student of anthropology at the University of Michigan. I did my first field work in photography for an independent project in India in 1972. Shortly after that, I met and became good friends with the late Maria Eisner, the mother of my best friend and founder of the international photography agency, Magnum. Through Maria, I learned in great detail of the work and lives of the great photojournalists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Andre Kertesz, Inge Morath, Margaret Bourke-White and W. Eugene Smith, whos work I admired the most. This relationship together with my anthropology background and field work in India and Japan forged a lifelong interest in cultural photography. Over the years, with the development of newer techniques and the maturation of craft, I have evolved an approach of my own.
