Mitsuhiro Abe

Born in Kanagawa, Japan in 1996, I began photography at the age of 18 while studying at university. Traveling through countries such as Nepal, Cuba, and Morocco, I encountered landscapes, cultures, and lives that quietly revealed the fragile and shifting nature of what we call “boundaries.”
I primarily work in black and white, attempting to make visible the ambiguity of boundaries — those that divide territories, histories, and identities, yet often remain fluid and uncertain beneath the surface.
Since 2019, I have photographed conflict zones in the Middle East and the lives shaped within them, confronting the tension between division and coexistence. The following year, I turned my attention to national borders, tracing their physical presence while questioning their permanence and meaning.
After graduating from university, I worked as a news cameraman for NHK, documenting domestic politics as well as disaster-stricken areas, including the Noto Peninsula earthquake. Through these experiences, I became increasingly aware of the subtle yet profound imprints that boundaries leave on both land and memory.
