Maureen Ruddy Burkhart

I was born in Philadelphia, grew up around the world and now reside in beautiful Colorado, USA. Photography has been a part of my life since I was a teenager. With my first camera, I set up people and things to portray my deep discontent with the world around me. Then I grew up and realized that its purpose is, indeed, to make sense in a crazy world. I am compelled to examine my world critically, the graphic elements are a given; they serve as a vehicle to convey deeper mystical and psychological meanings of images. From the mundane to the complex, I live for how the camera can embellish it and give meaning to me and to those who view them.

I received my BFA in Photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1976. I immediately found out that the world did not favor artists, at least not in a way that encouraged my full-time endeavor of it. I veered towards commercialism, and later filmmaking, eventually returning to fine art photography. I have exhibited in Inner Mongolia, New York, Santa Fe, Denver, and Boulder, Colorado.
