Monique Shelton

I am a contemporary abstract artist working primarily in encaustic and mixed media. My paintings are created /inspired less by specific places than by the emotional landscapes. we move through, moments of transition, memory, resilience, and quiet transformation.
Encaustic is central to my practice because it demands time, patience and discipline. Built from layers of molten beeswax, resin and pigment with repeated cycles of adding, scraping, fusing, and revealing......painting develop slowly. The process reflects my belief that meaning isn’t created all at once but discovered over time. Every layer leaves a trace, much like our own experiences.
My work often suggests horizons, water, weather, and geology without depicting them directly. I want viewers to bring their own experiences to the painting, finding spaces that feel both familiar and open to interpretation. Rather than offering the answers. I hope the work creates a moment of stillness—a place to pause in an increasingly fast-moving world.
Born and raised in California but now based in the Pacific Northwest, I create original encaustic paintings that bring depth, atmosphere, and the beauty.......deep beneath the surface.
