Musta Kema Kima

As a queer, lens-based artist (b. 1990, CY), I experiment with light and motion in-camera, to push the boundaries of the medium beyond traditional formats. In my work, I use a digital camera and avoid any digital manipulation.

By using natural or artificial light sources and movement, I convert the images into authentic and aesthetic objects that emphasise form, line and colour over narrative, negating any sense of space or time.

Light is not a means of visual perception in my work, but rather a medium that can be transformed through movement. The fluid motion of the body and camera — such as swaying, tilting, rotating and shifting — transforms a fixed light source into the subject of a composition.

I also explore the interconnectedness of micro and macrocosms in nature and society by capturing portraits, landscapes and street scenes in an abstract or documentary style.

I commute between Berlin and Cyprus.
