Iveth Natalia Piracoca

I am a transdisciplinary artist who explores desire as drive, as enjoyment, as impulse, as longing, as cultural construction, as symptom, as void, as excess. My practice is nourished by this vital force to give form to what is lacking.

I work with abstract acrylic painting of a deeply gestural and emotional character, as well as with conceptual food photography manipulated digitally. Both languages function as vehicles to materialize tensions between pleasure and repression, excess and lack. I also explore different mediums, such as illustration, writing, performance, installation, cooking, and artist’s books.

Food is one of my most recurrent and powerful themes. Cooking, the act of eating, and the discourse around food operate as an intimate archaeology: an unearthing of layers of personal and collective history. I am interested in the everyday decisions around food (what we choose, why we do it, how we narrate it) and their political and emotional consequences: waste, inequality, exclusion.

My work is also fed by a process of psychoanalytic therapy that has sharpened my gaze on enjoyment and its shadow: what is repressed, what is discarded, what becomes residue. I explore the edge between pleasure and excess, between what feed...
