Nicholas Griffin creates paintings that assimilate his surroundings, once he finds source material that engages him he alters them and combines them to form composite images through varying processes of drawing and collaging. These images remain rooted as eyes to his vision, they live and breathe as non existent but accessible spaces. Within his works there is an obvious lineage from art history but his work remains distinctly contemporary.
The works are articulated with subtlety and intent. He joyfully references the material qualities of his predecessors but still maintains a singular voice. Alongside the core painting he makes drawings and prints of everything that interests him, these inform and strengthen his practice.
In the initial stages of his works his economy of line and sense of composition allow the works to be pushed in a painterly and confident manner. Bringing together everything he is interested in to form a unique singular synthesis.
